Environmental Benefits

According to an April 2007 study by Gartner, 2% of all CO2 emissions worldwide are caused by information and communications technology (ICT). Of that, 23% comes from data centers. Irides' Arlington, Virginia data center is powered by 100% renewable energy and does not contribute to CO2 emissions from daily operations.

Our action is only a small part of the much larger goal of reducing carbon emissions but our conversion to renewable energy prevents approximately 1,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

One thousand tons of CO2 is easier to understand when it is compared to other activities that generate CO2. Each of the following produces about the same emissions as running our data center for one year (if it wasn't CO2 free that is):
